Carbondale ambulance heads to Mississippi

On Sunday, Carbondale officially kicked off its relief mission to a Mississippi community battered by Hurricane Katrina, sending an ambulance filled with medical and other supplies on a southbound road.According to a statement by the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District on Monday, the ambulance was loaded with many thousands of dollars worth of medical supplies donated by Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.The ambulance itself is a gift from the Carbondale firehouse to the town of Pearlington, Miss., which Carbondale is adopting as its part in helping the hurricane victims recover from the storm and its aftermath.Also in the ambulance were camping supplies and other outdoor survival gear requested by Pearlington officials and donated by individuals and businesses from the local community, according to the statement, which also referred to monetary donations supporting the delivery transportation costs.Two current Carbondale Fire Department volunteers and one former volunteer are driving the ambulance 1,600 miles to Pearlington.Our focus is attending to the needs of this hard-hit community, said Carbondale Fire Chief Ron Leach. This is a very good project. We have the total support of our community, and we know were doing the right thing.
