Carbondale armed robber pleads guilty

Nicholas Ameral, a 19-year-old arrested in a February armed robbery of a Carbondale convenience store, has pleaded guilty to felony aggravated armed robbery with a confederate.

Ameral and his cousin, Benjamin Weeks, were arrested in February following a gunpoint robbery of the Cowen Center Convenience Store in Carbondale — but not before leading authorities on a two-day manhunt in the hills above Basalt. Both were arrested with injuries from exposure after spending a night in the cold.

Authorities were searching for the pair of suspects when officers stopped a Roaring Fork Transportation Authority bus they were riding. The two leapt from the bus and fled on foot.

Last week, the district attorney filed the additional charge to which Ameral pleaded guilty in a plea agreement. Initially he was charged with 10 counts stemming from the robbery, eight of them for felony aggravated robbery and two for felony menacing.

Weeks, Ameral’s cousin from California, was then charged in April with first-degree murder by Las Vegas police, who were investigating a Jan. 16 homicide. A woman was found shot to death in her apartment. Weeks is still incarcerated in the Garfield County jail.

Ameral’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 25.
