Carbondale school construction delayed

Construction on two Carbondale schools will be delayed this year, pushing back opening dates by at least three months. Roaring Fork School District Re-1 Superintendent Fred Wall announced Wednesday that Crystal River Elementary School is now slated for completion in late 2006 and Roaring Fork High School is slated for completion in spring 2007. Wall had previously announced the new high school would be complete at the end of 2006. RFSD consultant Tim Brekel, of Architectural Resource Consultants, said subcontractors’ lack of interest in the construction projects is causing the delay. “Recent bidding reflected an increase in the costs of the projects and limited interest from the subcontracting community,” Brekel said in a written statement given to RFSD board members Wednesday. Wall said Thursday the district’s goal is to re-bid the construction contracts so that they fit their allotted budgets.”The RFSD is disappointed with the lack of the bids received in certain key trades and will be working with the contractor to increase subcontractor participation in the bidding process,” the statement said. “Additionally, the RFSD will be working with the design team and contractor to meet with subcontractors in an effort to further evaluate the bids provided.”Construction at Sopris Elementary in Glenwood Springs and all the RFSD schools in Basalt are on budget and on schedule, the statement said. Glenwood Springs High School is tentatively set to begin construction at the beginning of February. Glenwood Middle and Elementary schools are on schedule to begin construction this summer.
