Carbondale skier ‘was always upbeat’

Keith “Kato” Corn knew the Roaring Fork Valley was the place for him when he moved here in 1980.The Carbondale resident loved the outdoors, especially camping and skiing with family and friends. Corn, 48, died Saturday after hitting a tree at Snowmass Ski Area.He had been skiing with his wife, Beth Douglas, and friends on Cascade, an intermediate trail in the Two Creeks section of the ski area. He suffered trauma and died at Aspen Valley Hospital.Corn worked for an Avon-based company as a trim carpenter. He came to the valley after growing up in Wilmington, Ill., said his sister, Cindy Corn Thompson, also of Carbondale.”We came out together,” she said. “He loved it, had a lot of great friends here.”Along with the outdoors, Kato, as everyone called him, loved spending time with friends. Their gatherings were often filled with laughter, Thompson said.”Just a sweetheart,” she said.Corn’s best friend, Mark Walker, said he was “a fun-loving guy who was way into his sports. He loved football.” He followed the NFL, in particular his beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers.He described Corn as an expert skier.”He hadn’t skied very much in the last few years.
