Carbondale teen dies in car crash

John Sternig, 17, of El Jebel died Sunday, June 15, from injuries in a car accident on Interstate 70 near De Beque (see obituary, page 8).

Sternig was driving west in a 1995 Oldsmobile that hit the end of a guard rail on the right side of the roadway, at mile marker 59 in Mesa County, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The guardrail entered the car and struck Sternig.

State troopers were called to the scene at 10:29 a.m. on Sunday.

In critical condition, the Basalt High School student was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, according to Colorado State Patrol. Hospital representative Dan Prinster reported that Sternig died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
