Carbondale to refine Energy and Climate Protection Plan

CARBONDALE, Colorado ” Specific tasks related to the town’s Energy and Climate Protection Plan will be on the table Tuesday night during a joint meeting between Carbondale trustees, environmental board members and representatives from the Community Office for Resource Efficiency (CORE).

CORE is under contract with the town to implement the Energy Plan and help educate homeowners and builders about new building code requirements related to energy efficiency. The town has allocated another $75,000, and possibly up to $100,000, toward those efforts this year.

During budget discussions in the fall there were some questions raised about a lack of accountability in the program, and whether CORE needed more specific direction.

Among the ideas being explored include:

– Looking into the feasibility of a micro-hydro project on the Nettle Creek water line;

– Incorporating energy efficiency measures into the town’s planned $1.4 million wastewater treatment plant upgrade;

– Establishing a town-wide goal for kilowatts/megawatts of renewable energy by a certain future date; and,

– Coming up with a consumer guide to the various resources that are available.

Also being considered at the regular Carbondale Board of Trustees meeting is a request to fund a local air quality monitoring program. Tuesday’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Carbondale Town Hall, 511 Colorado Ave.
