CARBONDALE, Colorado – Dandelion Day, Carbondale’s creative community celebration of sustainability and environmental consciousness, returns for the 12th year on Saturday.

The day’s activities include a Crystal River cleanup hosted by the Roaring Fork Conservancy ( beginning at 8 a.m. Meet at Sopris Park and than depart to the river. Awards will be given for the best, most toxic, most useful, and most unusual piece of trash.

Registration for the 5K Dandelion Dash starts at 8 a.m. in the park, and the race starts at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the race benefit the Roaring Fork Rams football team.

The “Parade of the Species,” a celebration of earth’s diverse creatures, evolves down Main Street at 11 a.m.

The parade is open to anyone who wants to create a costume, mask or puppet honoring their favorite species to wear or carry in the parade. This is strictly a non-motorized event. Participants should arrive in costume at 2nd and Main streets by 10:45 a.m.

African dancers and drummers will lead the parade to Sopris Park where live acoustic music and other activities will be ongoing until 5 p.m.

The musical line-up includes local acts The Last Minute String Band and Steve Skinner. Also performing will be Stray Grass, a bluegrass band from Grand Junction.

There will also be displays by local non-profit organizations, environmentally-conscience vendors, beer from Stone Brewery, kids arts and crafts, solar cooking, a slow bike race and local food. Organic farmers will also be on hand with starters and flower baskets.
