Cardinals top Central, set a school record for victories

Kyra Chenoweth found net in the 55th minute, lifting Grand Valley’s girls soccer team to a 2-1 win over visiting Grand Junction Central on Friday.

The Cardinals trailed early, falling behind when the Warriors struck in the 14th minute.

Five minutes later, Ashlynn Speakman squared the count with a goal. Chenoweth assisted, finding Speakman with a crossing pass.

Speakman returned the favor on the game-winner, assisting Chenoweth, who ripped a shot to the far post from just outside the 18-yard box.

Desi McGee and Erin Schuckers split time at goalkeeper for Grand Valley. McGee came up with three saves and Schuckers five.

Codi Metcalf had a busy day on defense, diffusing Central threats all afternoon.

“I thought it was a pretty even match,” Cardinals coach Eric Sarno said. “Both teams went back and forth and battled the conditions, as the wind was blowing in all sorts of directions for 80 minutes.”

With the win, Grand Valley’s girls soccer program set a school record for victories. With seven games remaining, the Cardinals are now 5-3 and on a four-game win streak.

“There are some things we need to improve on, but the girls are continuing to play with confidence, and we are getting better and better,” Sarno said.

Grand Valley will travel to Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale on Tuesday.
