Caretaker cabin upgrades proposed near Hagerman

The Sopris Ranger District of the White River National Forest is gathering public comments as part of an environmental analysis on an application by the Board of Water Works of the city of Pueblo to upgrade caretaker facilities at Ivanhoe Reservoir near Hagerman Pass. Public comments are part of the process of identifying important issues and help determine the extent of analysis necessary for an informed decision on the proposed action.

The Pueblo board of water works operates the Busk Ivanhoe Water Diversion System, which consists of Ivanhoe Reservoir, three diversion ditches that feed the reservoir and the Carlton Tunnel. The tunnel was the old Midland Railroad tunnel and is now used to deliver water to the East Slope of the Rocky Mountains via Busk Creek into Turquoise Lake near Leadville, which supplies the cities of Pueblo and Aurora.

The present caretaker facilities are two small cabins and a bunkhouse that were built in the 1950s. Two employees of the board of water works who operate and maintain the water diversion system stay at Ivanhoe Reservoir from early April until mid-October. The proposal calls for replacement of the existing buildings with three housing units and one storage and maintenance building.

Anyone who wishes to comment on the proposal should submit comments in writing to the Sopris Ranger District, Attn: Len Newton, P.O. Box 309, Carbondale, CO 81623 by Sept. 13. For more information call Newton at 625-2371.
