Cascade II fire contained

Contained but not quite out.

That’s the official word concerning the Cascade II fire near the No Name Tunnels.

According Renee Brousseau, spokeswoman for the Upper Colorado Interagency Fire Management Crew, the fire was officially contained at 2 p.m. Wednesday and the city of Glenwood Springs took over jurisdiction of the fire Thursday.

“There’s still some hot spots,” Brousseau said. “There’s still a lot of smoke and there will continue to be a lot of smoke for a while.”

She said that there was little possibility that the fire could flare up again.

Possible rock slides are the main worry now, Brousseau added.

The Colorado Department of Transportation still has one lane of westbound Interstate 70 closed, as well as the bicycle path from Glenwood to No Name.

Brousseau said there were as many as 80 firefighters battling the blaze that started Monday. The fire burned a little more than 34 acres and no structures were ever in danger.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation, Brousseau said.

Brousseau also wanted to remind people that the fire season isn’t quite over.

“This is hunting season and people should be careful with their campfires and be sure to do what they can to help further prevent fires,” she said.

Brousseau said that fires during the fall are always troublesome, considering that most of the seasonal and contract firefighters are no longer available.
