Caverns tramway: Right idea, right time

It looks like the third time is the charm for the Glenwood Caverns Tramway project.

Partners Steve Beckley and Chuck Peterson vetted their new tramway, hotel and parking lot proposal to Glenwood Springs City Council last month and got a positive response.

Well they should.

The Glenwood Caverns alone have provided a huge boost to the city’s tourist economy.

Tramway access will allow the caverns to stay open year-round, not just in the summer and fall when the switchbacks up Iron Mountain are clear and dry.

The tram could double visits to the caverns, and the advantages for Glenwood Springs would be substantial.

Beckley and Peterson plan to base the tramway in the Two Rivers Plaza commercial center, off Devereux Road where the Land Rover dealer recently opened up.

Their plan includes a 118-space parking lot and a terraced, three-story hotel, to be developed separately by the owners of the Hotel Denver. The gondola-style tramway would run 4,000 feet up the southwest side of Iron Mountain to a mountaintop bar and entry to the caverns.

Folks would ride the tram the first time to see the caverns, but they would be drawn back just for the pleasure of watching the sunset.

With rights-of-way in place, we can see no reason for the city to deny this proposal, and every reason to expedite it.
