C’dale plans summer rodeo

Carbondale plans to promote itself as a rodeo kind of town next summer, with weekly performances as part of a circuit that includes stops in Fruita and Snowmass.To get the rodeo out of the chute, the Carbondale Board of Trustees voted Tuesday night to loan the DeBeque-based Rim Rock Rodeo Co. $3,000 to help defray start up costs.The loan pitch was made by the Carbondale Economic Development Council, which is working to stimulate the town’s economy.”It will be a strategy of the EDC to encourage overnight stays and expenditures in Carbondale,” said Economic Development Council Director Jo-an Barnett in a memo to the trustees. Barnett said the rodeo will also be a tourist attraction.In other action at Tuesday’s meeting, the trustees:-Will accept requests for proposals to design and build a maintenance and service facility at its roping arena. The facility, which Carbondale hopes to have built this fall, will house skating rink equipment, space for a meeting room, a concession stand, ice skates rental area and rest room.-Approved a special event liquor license for a beer tent at the chamber of commerce’s Oktoberfest, which will take place downtown on Saturday, Oct. 12.-Continued a public hearing on changes to setback and development standards in the 100 block of Main Street to allow for angled parking and increase the number of parking spaces in that area.-Heard a report from the Roaring Fork Transit Authority on recent complaints, including bus noise on downtown residential streets, lack of service in several parts of town, and lack of a park and ride lot.
