Chamber OKs Strawberry Days vendor policy

Strawberry Days is hoping to stay out of a pickle this year. The Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association, which puts on the annual festival, has adopted a new policy for accepting vendors to the festival. The policy change follows a lawsuit Mabel’s Kitchen filed before last year’s festival claiming the chamber kicked the vendor out of the festival. At the time, Chamber director Marianne Virgili said that vendor wasn’t kicked out, but simply not asked back. She alluded to the idea that the chamber tries to hire local businesses as vendors, even though Mabel’s Kitchen had sold its fry bread at the fair for 23 years previously. This year, the Chamber has adopted a new system and shouldn’t have any problems, she said. “The Chamber’s goal in selection of participants is to preserve the integrity of the festival, while still honoring local businesses,” reads the new guideline for the vendor applicants. The Chamber has adopted a point system based on originality, value, membership in the Chamber, length of membership, menu quality, longevity of as a Strawberry Days vendor, and whether a vendor is local, Virgili said. “Integrity of the festival is the primary consideration, and then to honor local businesses and Chamber members,” she said. “We just thought it was time to make (the selection process) crystal clear,” Virgili said.
