City adds more short-term parking spots

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Forty-seven downtown parking spaces will be converted from all-day spaces to the two-hour variety.

The change, part of phase 2 of City Council’s overall downtown parking plan, will affect two parking lots ” one is behind the U.S. Forest Service building at the corner of 9th Street and Cooper Avenue, the other is east of the Garfield County Courthouse in the middle of the 700 block of Colorado Avenue.

City Council voted to implement phase 2 of the recommendation, which will create additional customer parking, said Melissa Laeser, transportation manager for Glenwood Springs.

Some displaced parkers can use the old Municipal Operations Center parking lot for all-day storage, Laeser said, but she added that not all of the converted spaces will be replaced with other spaces.

“The parking recommendation does … create all-day parking at the city shops lot, but council wanted to hear input from neighbors before turning that lot into all-day parking,” Laeser said.

Although signs are already up, the new two-hour restrictions won’t be enforced until Monday, March 15, Laeser said.

Until then, police will place warnings on vehicles parked in the lots for more than two hours to help get drivers ready for the change.
