City hires new parks and rec director

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. Glenwood Springs will have a new parks and recreation director starting July 16.Tom Barnes comes from Whitewater, Wis., where he served as director of parks and recreation for more than 17 years and city forester for 14 years. Previously, Barnes was the director of the Manistee Recreation Association in Manistee, Mich., for two years and started his professional career in Brodhead, Wis., in 1982 as director of parks and recreation.According to the Glenwood Springs Human Resources Department, Barnes has been very active in community programs, serving on numerous committees, boards and commissions for the city, school districts and universities. Barnes has been involved in the Wisconsin Park and Recreation Association (WPRA) and currently sits on the Park Section Board of Directors. In recent years, Barnes was involved in planning the annual WPRA conference, coordinating several professional workshops on customer service and grants, and he’s participated in legislative meetings regarding grant funding, park districts and impact fees.Barnes said in a news release that he’s incredibly fortunate to have an amazing wife of 24 years, Sue, and three highly motivated, respected, and fun children to accompany him on his move to “God’s Country.” His kids Troy and Katey are attending a state university in Wisconsin, and Sally will be attending high school in Glenwood Springs, entering her sophomore year.Post Independent, Glenwood Springs Colorado CO
