City may award contract for aquatic center Thursday

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” At just under $3.48 million, Key Construction of Parker submitted the lowest bid to build the Community Center aquatic center.

The bids were opened Dec. 4 at City Hall.

The four bids were close, with the highest bid coming from Chicago-based Weitz Co. at $3.75 million.

The other two companies that bid on the job were FCI Constructors of Grand Junction, which bid $3.51 million, and Taylor Kohrs of Denver, which bid $3.66 million.

“The bids came in lower than expected, so we’re happy with that,” city manager Mike Copp said.

The most recent estimate for the project was $3.8 million to $4.1 million, which was up from the original estimate of $3.2 million. The price climbed with the addition of a cardio balcony for exercise equipment and a raised running track.

City Council could award the contract for the aquatic center at its regular meeting Thursday evening.

In addition to turning in the lowest bid, Key Construction also expressed interest in financing up to $2 million for the center.

In a letter to the city, the company wrote that, as an example, it could let the city borrow $2 million that would be paid back in semi-annual payments over five years at an interest rate of 4.5 percent.
