Clarification |

In the Feb. 3 Post Independent story about the fatal snowmobile accident that occurred north of Rifle, some details need to be explained and clarified.

The story used some comments from Donnie Smith talking about his friend Doug Davis, who was killed in the avalanche in the Little Box Canyon area on Feb. 1.

Smith was not at the scene of the accident and was recounting what he’d heard from other people. To include Smith’s comments about the involvement of snow-grooming activity possibly causing the accident was not appropriate. The Post Independent should not have reported speculative comments from someone who wasn’t at the scene.

According to reports and witnesses who were at the scene, snow-grooming activities were not to blame for the avalanche that claimed the life of Davis, a New Castle native.

The intent of the article was to recognize Doug Davis through the words of some of his friends and in no way was meant to attach blame for the accident to the snow groomers or the activity of snow-grooming.

The Post Independent apologizes for any harm the article may have done.
