Clear-cutting for drought a myopic plan

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to an article that appeared on Monday, Nov. 11, titled “State touts logging as a way to increase water.” I was struck by the absolute shortsightedness of the idea that we should aggressively clear-cut “huge amounts of forest” so as to provide water for things such as poorly planned subdivisions and the like. It is embarrassing to see our elected officials coming up with such myopic plans that yield to timber corporations and sell out citizens when other long-term solutions exist, primarily in the forms of conservation and community planning.

Set aside the party-line thinking for a second and look at the top two economic inputs for Colorado: recreation and tourism, mostly in the forms of hunting, skiing, and fishing (chances are these are activities most of you readers participate in). Clear-cutting 25-40 percent of a watershed would have devastating effects on all of these: destroying habitat for fish and wildlife, and the large visual impact swaths of land barren of trees visible from a ski hill. I was recently on a hut trip in British Columbia and saw this sad scene across the valley from our hut; growing up in Washington State there were few opportunities to go for a hike in the Cascades without crossing through a clear-cut area.

Clear-cutting our forests for more water is a short-term and ill-conceived plan for Colorado in terms of its beauty and its economy. I would ask that readers who feel connected with this issue contact Rep. McInnis and tell him that you don’t want clear-cuts to deal with a drought.
