CMC lost service overnight from gas line break

Kinder Morgan shut off service to Colorado Mountain College (CMC) Monday night in the aftermath of a gas line rupture Monday morning. The shutdown was done to “help keep gas in the system, said Kinder Morgan spokeswoman Natalie Shelbourn.CMC’s service was resumed Tuesday morning. The pipeline was breached by construction equipment working on the Ironbridge Golf Course subdivision. The 12-inch transmission line, owned by Kinder Morgan, runs from Rifle to Avon and also supplies gas to homes and CMC in Spring Valley. There were no fires or injuries as a result of the break, but between 50 and 100 homes and businesses along County Roads 154, on the east side of the Roaring Fork River, and 109, which runs next to Ironbridge on the west side of the river, were evacuated for several hours. The evacuation order was lifted around 2 p.m. Monday. Although the amount of gas that escaped between 10 a.m. when the line was ruptured and about 11:30 when the gas was shut off to that segment of pipe is unknown, “I’m sure it was a fair amount of gas,” Shelbourn said. She also noted that pipeline markers, either white tubes with yellow caps or yellow slats that stand about three feet above the ground, were in place and visible in the area.A call to the Ironbridge project management office was not returned.
