Coal Ridge boys advance in WSL tourney, face Aspen on Wednesday

CEDAREDGE – Coal Ridge’s boys basketball team turned a one-point halftime lead into a 73-52 win over Cedaredge in Monday’s 3A Western Slope League district tournament play-in game.

Andy Smedra scored 33 points, hauled in 11 rebounds and dished out eight assists to pace the Titans, who will travel to face top-seeded Aspen at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the tournament’s round of eight.

“We played really well,” Coal Ridge coach Paul Harvey said. “Things just kind of clicked.”

Darik Brown scored 13 points for Harvey’s Titans, who improved to 5-15 overall. Tyler Guettler scored 10.

Harvey credited his big man, Nathan Terrin, with shutting down Cedaredge’s Cade Sweeney, who has been a thorn the Coal Ridge’s side all season. Terrin’s defense held Sweeney to just 13 points after he lit up the Titans for a combined 54 points in the teams’ previous two meetings.

And then there was the night turned in by Smedra.

“He just didn’t want his career to end,” Harvey said. “He kind of put us on his back and carried us.”

Cedaredge wrapped up its season with a 6-14 record.

GUNNISON – Roaring Fork’s girls basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 46-33 loss at Gunnison in Monday’s 3A WSL district tournament play-in game.

The Rams finished up their season with a 0-20 record.

Gunnison (7-13) advances to face top-seeded Olathe in tonight’s round of eight. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
