Coal Ridge girls fall to DSST in Regional

DENVER – Coal Ridge High School’s girls basketball team hung tough with the third-seeded Denver School of Science and Technology on Friday, but a barrage of 3-pointers in the third quarter doomed the Titans to a 67-37 loss in the first round of the Class 3A Regional Tournament.

DSST’s 28-point third quarter – in which it hit six 3-pointers in the stanza – helped the Knights (21-3) pull away after leading 26-19 at halftime.

Coal Ridge (10-11), which got nine points each from Amanda Wentzel and Brittany Allen, couldn’t recover.

“I thought the kids played really hard,” first-year Coal Ridge coach Damon Martinez said. “This is a good thing, though, because we’re a fairly young team. Nobody on this this team got to go to the playoffs last year, so this experience will really help us.”
