Coal Ridge, Grand Valley girls basketball advance to sweet 16

Garfield County prep sports Friday night saw Grand Valley and Coal Ridge girls basketball teams advance from the first round of the Colorado Class 3A Regionals.

GRAND VALLEY

Grand Valley hosted Buena Vista, beating the Demons 60-51. The Cardinals mostly dominated the first half, out-scoring Buena Vista 48-27. The Demons tried to stage a comeback in the second half, chipping in 22 points to Grand Valley’s 24, but the Cardinals would hang on to take the victory.

Up next, the Cardinals (19-4, 5-2) host Colorado Academy (15-6, 7-3) in Parachute at 11 a.m. Saturday.

COAL RIDGE

Not to be outdone, Coal Ridge hung on long enough to best Resurrection Christian 45-43 on the road Friday.

The back-and-forth battle saw the Titans end the first half tied 19-19 against the Cougars. However, Coal Ridge’s 26 points to Resurrection Christian’s 24 in the second half were just enough to advance to the sweet 16.

Coal Ridge (13-6, 4-3) plays University (19-4, 7-2) in Greeley at 1 p.m. Saturday.
