Coal trains cool wheels in Glenwood

Those eastbound Union Pacific coal trains that have stacked up in West Glenwood Springs are parked to make room for railroad track maintenance between Glenwood and Denver, said Union Pacific spokesperson John Bromley.
“It should take a couple of weeks,” Bromley said.
Glenwood Springs should not feel any effect from the trains, Bromley said.
Bromley said the coal trains come from mines in Delta County, and are headed east to power plants in Denver, Colorado Springs, Texas and the Midwest.
The trains average about 110 cars, but can be expanded to 134 when the rails don’t run through the mountains.
Most of the maintenance work between Glenwood Springs and Denver is for curved rail replacement.
“Curved rails wear out faster than straight ones, and in the mountains, a lot of the rails are curves,” Bromley said from his office in Omaha, Neb.
Bromley said 11 eastbound Union Pacific freight trains run through Glenwood Springs every day, but not all are coal trains.
Some coal cars are owned or leased by utility companies, and some are owned by Union Pacific. Bromley said privately owned cars have an “X” after their serial number, while Union Pacific cars have a “UP” before or after the number.
The parked coal trains in West Glenwood Springs have nothing to do with complaints Avon and Edwards residents have lodged against Union Pacific for parking trains on rail sidings in those areas.
Bromley said those trains are empty. Sooner or later, residents in Avon, Edwards and other places tend to complain.
“There isn’t a good place to hide rail cars,” he said.
Bromley said Union Pacific is also parking coal trains at Tabernash, located north of Winter Park on Highway 40, and between Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction.
“We’re putting them anywhere we can hold them,” Bromley said.
