College honors EnCana’s scholarship donations with jazz concert at CMC

Southwestern jazz will heat up the Spring Valley Campus of Colorado Mountain College in the first concerts of the Jim Calaway Honors Series Nov. 18-19. A New Mexico-based group named Chimera, specializing in flamenco, as well as Portuguese Jobim bossa, will play at the New Space Theater. The Nov. 18 concert pays tribute to $40,000 in scholarship donations to CMC students by EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. EnCana made donations in the summers of 2003 and again in 2004 to the Marge Lowderback Memorial Scholarship, honoring a Rifle resident who achieved her degree at 80 years old. This year, four students received scholarships to CMC’s Rifle Campus. EnCana’s Joel Fox, team leader for South Piceance Basin, said, “EnCana supports education and believes in helping those who may not be able to achieve their educational goals for financial reasons. We are proud to contribute to the Marge Lowderback scholarship fund, and to support students at Colorado Mountain College.” It is natural that EnCana would support education that helps supply a trained workforce. CMC is working with the entire oil and gas industry to develop training in certificate and degree programs not only for the industry, but also to support growth brought on by the industry. In fact, North Dakota Gov. John Hoven has cited CMC’s plan as a model that other states and institutions of higher education can follow to address natural gas and oil labor needs. Hoven is chairman of the Blue Ribbon Task Force of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.”EnCana’s partnership with CMC includes scholarships, safety training, and vocational opportunities, which all serve to enrich the communities in which we operate,” said EnCana’s Walter Lowry, director of community and industry relations. “We are committed to the strength and sustainability of the region.”EnCana’s scholarship gifts helped endow the Marge Lowderback Memorial Scholarship, said CMC Foundation CEO Alex Yajko, “We honor EnCana’s commitment to education and the company’s gifts to this permanent scholarship have set a standard for corporate support of education at CMC.” Chimera concerts start at 7 p.m. Nov. 18-19. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Patron tickets in support of the Jim Calaway Honors Series are $100 for the season’s three musical venues, and season tickets are $40 for all three performances.
