Colorado great place for renewable energy

Rex Wilmouth

Dear Editor,

This session, both the houses of the Colorado legislature went on record supporting strong policies to promote renewable energy. Unfortunately, time ran out before the Senate and the House could reconcile differing versions of the Colorado Renewable Energy Standards bill, SB180. The Colorado Public Interest Research Group (CoPIRG) expects this legislation to pass in the next session, and wants to thank Rep. Rippy for his support of the bill.

The Renewable Energy Standards bill would have promoted renewable energy options such as wind and solar power. Receiving over 300 sunny days per year, and having the ninth-best wind potential in the country, Colorado can be a leader in renewable energy development Renewable energy is economically pleasing, with thousands of new jobs being one of the most appealing benefits. This is especially important in rural Colorado’s struggling agricultural communities: a farmer with 30 wind turbines on his property could make $60-$90,000 each year in royalties. Cleaner air and water are guaranteed with renewable energy, and there is no environmental impact in the construction and operation of wind turbines and solar panels.

In his support for the Renewable Energy Standards bill, Rep. Rippy is promoting the health of the economy and the people, as well as the health of our environment. With Colorado’s energy demand growing at 3 percent every year, we need new solutions that offer economic growth and stability. Renewable energy is an important part of this solution.
