Comments sought on Rifle Ranger District prescribed fires plan

The Rifle Ranger District of the White River National Forest is seeking public comment on a proposal to continue prescribed fire within oakbrush and mountain shrub communities across the district.

The project is a cooperative effort with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and is intended to improve wildlife habitat. Most of the environmental documentation for the prescribed burning, which has been used in the district for many years, is due to expire.

Approximately 1,500-2,000 acres of burning per year is proposed, depending on weather and other factors.

The proposal also includes new areas that have not been treated.

Send written comments to Kim Porter at the Rifle Ranger District, 0094 County Road 244, Rifle, CO 81650, by May 5.
