Committee to discuss severance tax in Rifle

RIFLE, Colo. A state legislative committee that is studying how best to distribute energy industry tax revenues among state and local governmental entities will be meeting in the Rifle area Monday and Tuesday.The public is being invited to offer comments on Tuesday from 2:45-4:15 p.m. at the Re-2 School District administration building at 839 Whiteriver Ave. in Rifle.The committee was formed to evaluate the allocation of severance tax and federal mineral leasing revenues, including to communities affected by energy development. It based Monday and Tuesday’s meetings in Rifle so members could get a firsthand look at impacts on things such as the environment, transportation and housing.The 11-member committee is chaired by state Sen. Gail Schwartz, D-Snowmass Village, and Rep. Kathleen Curry, D-Gunnison. Some of the other members include Rep. Al White, R-Winter Park, whose district includes western Garfield County, and Sen. Jack Taylor, R-Steamboat Springs, whose district includes Garfield County.The committee plans to take a bus tour to visit oil and gas operations and look at impacted areas.
