Roaring Fork Valley residents pursuing education or training in healthcare are eligible to apply for an Aspen Valley Medical Foundation (AVMF) scholarship. The scholarship program provides assistance with tuition for undergraduate or graduate degree programs, conferences and training workshops in physical and behavioral health care. The final 2012 scholarship deadline is 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20. Applicants can drop their applications at the AVMF office located at 616 E. This is the 20th anniversary for the AO Chapter of PEO’s Annual Elegant Auction. This year’s Elegant Auction will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the Hotel Colorado. Tickets can be purchased at A La Carte, 945-5027. In addition to local scholarships for area high school, the Advocate Safehouse Project and Girl Scouts will be the recipients of the proceeds. Learn about CASA of the Ninth District, a nonprofit organization that helps children involved in abuse and neglect cases in Garfield, Pitkin, and Rio Blanco counties. The New Castle Lions will host the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Nov.17, at the New Castle Community Center, 423 West Main. The Lions will provide roast turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, several varieties of dressing, and beverages. Guests are invited to bring a side dish or dessert. The Rifle, New Castle, and Gordon Cooper Branch Libraries will be closing early at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, in celebration of Thanksgiving. All six branches of the Garfield County Libraries will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23. The libraries will reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24. Call 625-4270 with questions.

Fall vaccine clinics have been organized by Garfield County. For the 2012-13 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older should get an annual vaccine. While currently the CDC reports very little flu activity, the season usually begins in October and can last through May.No appointments are necessary for community clinics in Garfield County. Adult flu shots or nasal mist are $20, and children’s shots or nasal mist are $10, payable by cash or check. The health department accepts Medicaid, Medicare Part B and CHP+.
