Potter Diane Kenney’s annual holiday sale takes place the next two Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 8 and 15 at her studio at 0172 N. Bill Creek Road, just six miles outside of Carbondale. Join the Carbondale Clay Center from 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 for its annual Cup Auction event. With more than 200 cups available, donated by local and national artists, the cup auction helps to support the center’s mission to achieve awareness of the ceramic arts by building community through diverse, clay-related activities, accessible to all. Children are invited to the New Castle, Silt, and Rifle Branch Libraries on Friday afternoons in December for engaging math activities and games taught by Re-2 teachers and lots of fun. Classes for kindergartners through second graders will be held at each library from noon to 2 p.m., and classes for third- and fourth-graders will be held at each library from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Each class will be limited to 25 students, on a first-come, first-served basis. Cub Scout Pack 220 of Silt is helping Toys for Tots by collecting new toys for families in need in Garfield County. Donations of new, unwrapped toys from the community are sought through Monday, Dec. 10. Drop off locations are Clark’s Market in Battlement Mesa, Wal-Mart and City Market in Rifle, Dollar General in Silt, and City Market in New Castle.Scouts will be at the entrances to the Rifle Wal-Mart store on Saturday, Dec. 8. The scouts plan to present the toys to Marine Corps members at the pack meeting on Dec. 13 at Cactus Valley Elementary School in Silt.
New Castle Family Fitness is hosting a farewell party for Dave and Jo Lee, 32-year residents of New Castle. The couple is moving to Chicago to be near their children. Everyone is welcome to stop by and wish them farewell from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at New Castle Family Fitness, 201 Castle Valley Blvd.
Author Jonathan Waterman will present “The Colorado River: Flowing Through Conflict,” a presentation based on his book of the same title. The free program will be held at at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14 the Glenwood Springs Branch Library and is open to the public. Waterman’s prose is augmented by Peter McBride’s photography as they follow the river’s 1,450-mile journey from its headwaters high in the Colorado Rockies to its dried-up delta touching the Sea of Cortez. Waterman’s presentation is made possible by a grant from Xcel Energy Foundation and is presented in partnership with Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book, Water 2012 and the Glenwood Springs Branch Library.
