Approximately 400 disabled veterans will converge on the Roaring Fork Valley for the Silver Anniversary (25 years) of the DAV Winter Sports Clinic held at Snowmass Ski Resort March 27 through April 1.

The veterans have disabilities including traumatic brain injury, amputations, visual impairment and debilitative spinal cord injuries. They participate in activities such as skeet shooting, scuba diving, swimming in the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Pool, skiing and snowmobiling, to name a few.

The purpose of this annual event is to expose the participants to activities that might otherwise not be available to them. These “Miracles on a Mountainside” have motivated them to experience something they have never experienced before. The rigorous activities help inspire disabled veterans to see beyond their current situation and give them the impetus to reach new horizons in their lives.

Volunteers from the Elks Lodges of Rifle, Glenwood Springs and Aspen provide lunches at their lodges, a wild game luncheon at Lake Cristine and on the slope of the Snowmass Ski area. Donations of elk and pheasant would be appreciated.

Volunteers are needed to help the veterans transfer from commercial airlines to charter flights from Denver to Aspen. Elks lodges and other volunteers provide assistance at the Aspen airport upon arrival and departure. Veterans from all over the United States come to this event to assist and participate in this incredible event.

Interested volunteers may contact local Elks Lodges. For more information, contact the Glenwood Springs Elks Lodge at 945-2286, the Rifle Elks Lodge at 625-2195 and the Aspen Elks Lodge at 925-9071.
