Target is holding a Reading Across America event on Saturday, Feb. 27, that is open to the community! In celebration of Dr. Suess’ birthday, we will be reading “Oh! The Places You’ll Go” and “Green Eggs and Ham”. The event will run from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Glenwood Springs Target. Goodies will be provided. Parents should attend with their children.

Tickets are now on sale for Symphony Swing, the Symphony in the Valley’s gala to benefit the community orchestra.The gala events feature the full orchestra and the Symphony in the Valley Jazz Orchestra playing the top tunes from the Big Band era, with a variety of guest vocalists, including Jeannie Walla, Debbie Dawson, Lorraine Curry, Krista Espelien, Kelly Thompson and the ensembles Mixed Emotions and The Sirens.Symphony Swing will be presented at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs.The Glenwood Springs event is a swanky dinner dance with a short live auction, and advance reservations are necessary. Bookcliff, Mount Sopris and South Side Conservation Districts are hosting a workshop on Feb. 27 at the Glenwood Springs Community Center for small acreage landowners that are interested in backyard farming and sustainability. The workshop will address tree care and pruning fruit trees, challenges and opportunities in gardening, forest management, biological control, grazing management for horses, cattle selection and sheep guard dog management. Sunlight Mountain Resort needs volunteers for The Endurance Challenge on Feb. 28. This 12 hour hike-up/ski-down race endurance race challenges skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers to hike a run called Rebel and then ski, board, hike or otherwise slide down the always exciting run Beaujolais.Racers are competing to complete the most amount of laps in a 12-hour period. Volunteers can expect to help event staff with timing and course set-up and breakdown. Each volunteer will be given a race T-shirt, $15 meal card and two Sunlight lift tickets than can be used anytime through the remaining 2010 ski season.Race information can be found online at Please contact Ken Murphy at (970) 456-7907 to volunteer.

Republican businessman Walker Stapleton, a candidate for the office of Colorado state treasurer, will be in Glenwood Springs on March 3 for a “meet and greet” event.Stapleton, a fourth generation Coloradan, is CEO of a real estate firm operating in Colorado and California, and holds investments in land, retail and residential projects.He is aiming to unseat the incumbent, Democrat Cary Kennedy, in the November general election. Two other men, J.J. Ament and Ali Hasan, also are in the race for the Republican nomination.The meet and greet will be at the Village Inn at 7:30 a.m., 102 W.
