Garfield County Public Health is providing dental fluoride varnishes for children ages 1-12 years old. Fluoride varnish is “painted” onto teeth as a protective coating that helps prevent cavities (and helps stop cavities that have already started). The varnish takes only minutes to apply and dries almost immediately. Fluoride varnishing clinics will begin Tuesday, Sept. 7, in Rifle and Tuesday, Sept. 21, in Glenwood Springs from 8:30-11 a.m. Clinics will continue to be held the first Tuesday of the month in Rifle and the third Tuesday of the month in Glenwood Springs from 8:30-11 a.m. No appointment is necessary. The cost for a fluoride varnish is $5.

The Northwest Colorado APA pool league will be starting its Fall Session on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m. League play is available at four locations in Rifle: The Moose Lodge, The Texan, Sports Corner and Cheermeisters. Local photographers will continue the journey through the wonderful world of digital photography with the Digital Camera Club. Join in the discussions on lighting, focus, color, angles, lenses, software, and all aspects of turning a photo into art. The club will meet at the New Castle Branch Library on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. Please remember your camera and recent photos (either printed or stored). Parents and their children are invited to attend the Nurturing Parent Program. This 15-week series of classes starts Tuesday, Sept. 7, and goes from 5:30-8:30 p.m. It will be presented by the Roaring Fork Family Resource Centers at Glenwood Springs Elementary School.This program is designed to increase communication, cooperation, closeness and respect. Parents and children learn to handle feelings, communicate needs, understand each other better, take charge of their own behavior, feel good about themselves and have fun together. Practical, effective techniques are taught for handling challenging behavior and conflicts.This family-centered program is evidence-based and proven to be effective in building healthy and caring families. Geothermal energy has huge advantages over other forms of energy; it’s clean, available 24/7, and once infrastructure is in place, the fuel is free. The Governor’s Energy Office and the Colorado Geothermal Working Group are hosting a public workshop in Glenwood Springs to share information about geothermal energy uses, technologies, and the potential for expanding uses of this clean, abundant and renewable energy resource. The free Geothermal Workshop will be held from 2:45 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Glenwood Springs Community Center, 100 Wulfsohn Road in Glenwood Springs. The Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association’s 24th annual Issues and Answers Night will be on Tuesday, Sept. 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Glenwood Springs City Hall. The community will have the opportunity to hear from Garfield County Commissioner candidates Trsi Houpt and Tom Jankovsky; Garfield County Assessor candidates John Gorman and Jim Yellico; and Garfield County Sheriff candidates Thomas Dalessandri and Lou Vallario.Kathleen Curry, Luke Korkowski and Roger Wilson – candidates for Colorado House District 61- will be in attendance. Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes will provide a brief statement. The public is invited to attend, and the event will also be broadcast live on Cable Channel 12. Ron Milhorn, news director of Colorado West Broadcasting/KMTS Radio, will moderate.The event is co-sponsored by the Glenwood Springs Post Independent, Cable Channel 12, Colorado West Broadcasting (KMTS) and local State Farm Insurance agents, Jeff Leonard and Dee McCown.

The 24th annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trials is set for Sept. 8-12 off of Highway 13 just west of Meeker.Feisty sheep challenge 125 top international dog/handler teams vying for a $25,000 purse plus other prizes. Art contest/auction, food and craft fair, American Humane Association Rescue Rig; dog handling, saddle making and other demos; petting farm; pancake breakfasts and barbecue, bluegrass concert and more family fun.Cost: Adults: $10; age 8-16 & 65+: $5; under 8 free.

A new Outdoor Emergency Care class will be held over the next couple of months. Class begins on Thursday, Sept. 9, and continues Mondays and Thursdays to prepare you for work with ski patrol, search and rescue or other groups. The first Constitution-signing rally in the area will be held the at the Garfield County Courthouse in Glenwood Springs from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. All incumbents, candidates and nominees affecting Garfield county offices are invited to sign the Constitution, along with our Founding Fathers, friends, families and organizations, by personally attending or e-mailing their signed proxy. Attorney General for Colorado, John W. Suthers, will present his stance on how current federal legislation affects the Constitution and the freedom of choice for its citizens. Colorado singer/songwriter, Joyce Shaffer, will perform songs from her CDs and Colorado author Mike Holler whose book “The Constitution Made Easy.” has enlightened families and schools everywhere about our country’s governing document, will have these affordably priced books available for purchase.The public is welcome and veterans, students and their schools, patriotic organizations, churches, businesses etc., are encouraged to be a part of this “bringing America together” event by e-mailing their ideas to sistersu@rof.net.
