The Grand Valley Historical Society will host Teddy Roosevelt at its winter meeting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the historic Battlement Mesa schoolhouse.The program features Doug Mishler in the role of President Teddy Roosevelt.Mishler, who holds a PhD in American cultural history, has done more than 1,000 Chautauqua historical presentations and one-man shows since 1992. He has portrayed William Lloyd Garrison, Ernie Pyle, Captain William Clark, Andrew Carnegie and Edward R. Murrow as well as Theodore Roosevelt.The Historical Society program is sponsored in part by Colorado Humanities.Admission is free to Historical Society members, while a donation of $3 is requested of nonmembers.
The Aspen Valley Medical Foundation (AVMF) is offering Aspen Valley Hospital employees and local individuals pursuing health careers a scholarship opportunity. The scholarship program provides assistance with tuition and other appropriate related expenses for undergraduate or graduate degree programs, conferences, workshops, seminars, and trainings. The next deadline to apply is Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, by 3 p.m. Applications are reviewed for consideration by the Education committee of AVMF.The 2011 deadlines are Jan. 25, April 19, July 5, and Nov. 29, all due by 3 p.m. Last year, the AVMF awarded $80,000 to healthcare professionals for educational opportunities.Following are the scholarships offered: AVH Employees Education Scholarships: Applicants must be AVH employees and scholarships are offered four times a year for assistance in continuing education as it relates to employees’ professional duties. Audrey Owings Memorial Scholarship for EMTs/Paramedics: Applications are open to Roaring Fork Valley residents pursuing certification or re-certification. Scholarships are offered four times a year. Nursing Scholarships: Applications are open to Roaring Fork Valley residents currently enrolled in state-accredited schools of nursing or pre-nursing in associate, baccalaureate, or master’s degree programs. These scholarships are offered four times a year. Pre-nursing students are students enrolled in college or university programs designed as preparation for entrance into a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing. Dr. Rodney E. Kirk Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is offered once a year (April deadline to apply annually) to Roaring Fork Valley residents pursuing health-related education.
