A local sewing shop is sponsoring a Sewing Expo in Centennial Park on Sept. 12, and is inviting the public to check it out.Sandy Boyd at Glenwood Sewing Center said the expo will include local 4H sewing groups from Garfield and Eagle counties, quilting guilds from Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt, Rifle and DeBeque, high school home economics departments, girl scouts, knitting groups and more.On display will be demonstrations of sewing and knitting techniques, equipment and products of “local sewists and knitters” to examine.In addition, attendees can take part in “make it/take-it” projects, where they sit down and create their own project and then take it home.Boyd said the expo is an opportunity “to celebrate the fun of sewing, to showcase quilts, county fair entries, 4H and student sewists’ projects and more,” and urged “anyone interested in joining a quilt guild, or learning to sew or knit, or signing up for 4H” to come on down.The expo is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. at Centennial Park, at the intersection of Ninth and Grand.For more information call Boyd at 945-5900.

The 23d annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trial will take place the week after Labor Day. That is, Sept. 9-13.At the Meeker Classic, Don Helsley, an accomplished handler, will call the errors made by 124 top international dog/handler teams as they vie for the $20,000 purse facing North America’s toughest sheep. The All Saints’ Episcopal Church of Battlement Mesa will hold its annual “Chili and Bluegrass Festival” from 5-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, featuring music, food and dancing. Everyone will be treated to chili and the usual fixin’s of cornbread or crackers, apple pie and a cold beverage. The meal and entertainment is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.
