Nationally known speaker Kent Whitaker will be speaking at the Church at Redstone on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. In 2003, Kent’s son Bart orchestrated the murder of his mother and brother and the attempted murder of Kent. Kent now shares what he has learned from the shootings: the importance of forgiveness, trusting when it doesn’t make sense, and the need for emotional and relational healing. The Rifle Branch Library is now open at the new temporary facility at 139 W. Third St. in Rifle. You will find the same great books, materials, and services in a bright new space ready to be explored. The library will remain at this location while construction on the new library building takes place on East Second Street. The women’s Auxiliary of The American Legion of Carbondale will be hosting a fish fry for our troops to raise money to send care packages. The big dinner takes place at the American Legion Hall Post 100, 97 Third St. in Carbondale on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. Minimum donation is $10 per personWe will also have a donation box at the Legion Hall as well for anyone wanting to donate some items. There will be a list there as well. Hours for the Legion are Monday through Friday, 3-9 p.m.; Saturdays, noon to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. If you have any questions call the Legion at 963-2381.



Garfield County Public Library District will be having an asset sale on Oct. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The sale will be at the old Rifle Branch Library building at 107 E. Second St. in Rifle. There will be fixtures, etc., from the former Rifle Branch Library and Country Attic buildings for sale as well as furniture, equipment, shelving, etc., from all the Garfield County libraries. Public viewing of the items will be held Thursday and Friday (Oct. 1-2) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bids will be accepted through noon on Saturday. Items purchased must be removed from the site by Oct. 6. If you are interested in the sale but cannot make it to the public viewings call Wilma at 625-4270 for accommodations.

A Space Derby race for boys ages 6-10 will be held on Sept. 29 from 6-8 p.m. at the Rifle Elks Lodge, 501 W. Fifth St., to encourage boys to get involved in the Rifle/Silt Cub Scouts. For more information contact Janet Bodrogi at 987-3529 or e-mail riflepack223@comcast.net.



The White River Trail Runners ATV club is will have its monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Garfield County Fairgrounds. All interested are welcome to attend.For more information contact club president David Hillbrand at (970) 948-9326.

Carbondale Recreation will be hosting a local meet for the Denver Broncos/NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass, and Kick competition. Test your skills in this fun contest. Participants will compete in punting, passing, and place kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy. Age classifications will be based on the participant’s age as of Dec. 31, 2009. There are separate divisions for boys and girls. Cleats are not allowed. Top finishers from each age division will advance to a Sectional Competition in Grand Junction in October. Boys and girls ages 8-15 are welcome to compete in this free event. The contest will be held Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 5 p.m. at Sopris Park.
