Computer issues on commissioners’ block

Donna Gray

The Garfield County commissioners will go into Christmas week with computer glitches rather than sugar plums in their heads. After citizen comments at 8 a.m., the commissioners will change hats to become the Human Services Commission at 10:15 a.m. They’ll consider a variety of issues, including a problematic new statewide computer system for managing social services and delivering welfare benefits. The troubled system has caused a backlog of food stamp, Medicaid and other assistance affecting thousands of people in Colorado.Public health nurse Mary Meisner will also give the commissioners a report on the highlights of the year, most notably a successful campaign to aggressively treat mosquito breeding areas in the county to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus. The Roaring Fork Transit Authority’s Dan Blankenship will appeal to the commissioners for more support for the Grand Hogback bus service that serves the communities west of Glenwood Springs. Also on tap for Monday’s meeting is adoption of the 2005 county budget and certification of mill levies for property taxes.Public meetings covering a variety of land use issues are scheduled for 1:15 p.m.The meeting takes place at Courthouse Plaza, 108 Eighth St., Glenwood Springs. The meeting takes place at Courthouse Plaza, 108 Eighth St., Glenwood Springs.
