Conrardy catches break, rolls into semis

DENVER ” Greeley Central’s Scott Schaeffer was all over Rifle’s James Conrardy. The Bear 135-pounder was down 7-0 in the first minute of his quarterfinal in the Class 4A state wrestling tournament in the Pepsi Center.

Then the tides began to turn. Conrardy got a few reversals to cut Schaeffer’s lead to 9-6 in the second period and then Schaeffer had to take an injury timeout. There was no blood, but Schaeffer had to stop. They started to wrestle and he had to stop again with Schaeffer clinging to a 10-9 lead at the start of the third period.

The two hit the mats again and Schaeffer had to call timeout again and it cost him the match.

Wrestlers can’t have three injury timeouts, so Schaeffer was disqualified and Conrardy was awarded the win.

Conrardy, the lone Rifle wrestler still eligible for a title, will be back in action in the semifinals which begin tonight at 7:15 p.m.
