Construction site suffers theft, damage

GYPSUM – Thieves damaged or stole $500,000 worth of construction equipment and concrete from the Costco construction sight sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office reported.”I would say this is probably one of the biggest (thefts) we’ve had … short of a bank robbery,” Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Andree said. The theft happened between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday. Investigators suspect more than two thieves performed the heist, based on the size and number of items stolen, Andree said. The culprits entered the construction sight through a gate, she said.”It’s such a remote sight,” Andree said. “It’s difficult to monitor.”Over 100 items including power tools, hand tools, generators, welders and a band saw comprised the bulk of the $500,000, Andree said.A large crane was damaged, perhaps when the thieves tried to move objects, Andree said. At least three 6-by-6 foot concrete slabs were damaged when the thieves dropped a 500-pound welder, she said. The stolen items can be resold and the theft was likely planned, Andree said.”They probably staked it out to get to know the area better and when equipment was unattended,” Andree said.Investigators plan to compare the incident to thefts at other Costco and Eagle County construction sights, Andree said.If captured, the thieves might face charges of felony theft, second-degree burglary, trespassing, criminal mischief and criminal tampering, Andree said.Andree said she recommends all tools at construction sights be serialized and insured to minimize loss.Staff Writer J.K.
