GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – The Grand Avenue Paving Project (GAPP II) is now set to begin Wednesday, after some minor contract issues were worked out between the Colorado Department of Transportation and the general contractor on the project.

The project had been scheduled to begin Monday, but was put on hold last Friday until the issues could be resolved, GAPP II project spokesman Tom Newland said.

“We got the contract squared away and are ready to go on Wednesday,” he said Monday afternoon.

The project will involve the resurfacing of the asphalt driving lanes to concrete for a half-mile section of State Highway 82 (Grand Avenue and Glen Avenue) between Sayre Park and 24th Street.

Initial work this week will involve setting up traffic control, erosion control improvements and utility locations, although demolition of the old surface could begin as early as Friday, Newland said.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions during the three-month duration of the project.

The 23rd Street intersection and South Grand Avenue will also be closed to through traffic. Motorists wishing to access areas east of Grand Avenue in that area can use 20th Street, and those coming and going from the South Grand area will need to use the 27th Street detour.

The pedestrian crossing signal at Sayre Park will also not be in operation during the construction, and pedestrian access in general will be limited..

“The sidewalks along Grand Avenue will also be replaced as part of the project, so pedestrian movement in the area will be impacted,” Newland said in an earlier press release regarding the scope of the project.

The only Grand Avenue crosswalk that will be available in the project area will be at 20th Street, near Safeway.

Public transportation will also be impacted by the project. The upvalley Roaring Fork Transit Authority/Ride Glenwood bus stop in front of Safeway will be relocated to 23rd Street, and the downvalley stop in front of the Glenwood Springs Post Independent office will be moved to the north end of Sayre Park.

The city of Glenwood Springs and CDOT officials are hoping to have the project completed before June, when the summer tourism season kicks into high gear.
