COPs decision was correct

Dear Editor,

The City Council decision on Aug. 7 was a responsible and positive choice with our community’s best interests in mind.

I have been a varsity golfer on the Glenwood Springs High School golf team for four years. We are the only team on the Western Slope without a practice facility or an 18-hole public golf course. Most junior golfers drive to Aspen twice a week because Glenwood Springs does not have a golf course with a practice range. In order to practice for high school golf, you have to travel to Rifle, Grand Junction or Aspen to find an adequate practice facility.

The golf course is needed for its impact on tourism and because of the benefits it provides our youth and community.

At first I wasn’t sure COPs were the soundest method to finance the golf course. However, after listening to the council members and getting the real facts, I believe the city is making a solid financial investment.

By not delaying this issue longer and not waiting for a public vote, City Council is trying to save the taxpayers money by taking advantage of current low interest rates.

Our council members have the knowledge to take intelligent risks without a public vote. The majority of those speaking at the meeting supported the golf course, swimming pool, and kayak park. The citizens want these amenities, and I applaud City Council for moving forward to provide these facilities.
