On Jan. 10, Rifle police saw a car speeding down Park Avenue. The car drove around several marked police cars, over a curb and was eventually stopped by several officers on foot. Javier Castaneda-Quintana, 24, of Parachute was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, no insurance and careless driving. -On Jan. 20, Glenwood Springs police were called to Wal-Mart for a report of a shoplifter. According to the police report, Ryan P. Cevette, 20, of Carbondale was struggling with employees when they were trying to detain him. He was arrested on suspicion of theft, harassment, third-degree criminal trespass, third-degree assault and possession of methamphetamines. -On Jan. 22, Glenwood Springs police reported a vehicle traveling to Arby’s restaurant was driven by a man with an arrest warrant. Once they pulled it over, police found that the driver, Carl J. Glammeyer, 31, of Rifle, was allegedly intoxicated. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, DUI per se, driving while under restraint and on a warrant.-On Jan. 25, 73-year-old William Stark, of Wisconsin, was found under the Marolt pedestrian bridge in Aspen. Aspen police and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Department responded, and aid was provided throughout transport to Aspen valley Hospital. Stark was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital. The matter is still under investigation.

Garfield County commissioners are bucking the Western Slope trend against the proposed Uinta Basin Railway (UBR), 88 miles of new track that would connect the eastern Utah oil fields to Gulf Coast refineries via the national railroad network running through Colorado.
