County builds new facility for Community Corrections

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. With the success of the Garfield County Community Corrections program has come the need for more space to house inmates. This summer the county broke ground on land it owns near the county airport outside Rifle for a new 10,000-square-foot Community Corrections building.Despite the $1.5 million outlay for construction, over time it will save the county the $40,000 a month it spent on sending clients to Community Corrections programs in other counties. In 2003, the county set aside segregated space in the jail to house Community Corrections, but the program has now outgrown that space, said county operations director Dale Hancock.”We’ve been filling our quota of inmates here in 4,500 square feet” in the jail, Hancock said, but that equates to less square footage per person than the state Department of Criminal Justice requires.Once the new building is completed it will free up that space for the greater use of the jail.County government felt the need for a new self-contained building because of increased demand for the program.”We’re a fast-growing county,” Hancock said. “It’s better to treat our problems in our community rather than exporting our problems to other communities.”Although construction is going slower than expected, Hancock said he hopes it will be completed by early spring.Contact Donna Gray: 945-8515, ext. 16605dgray@postindependent.comPost Independent, Glenwood Springs Colorado CO
