RIFLE, Colorado – Authorities are investigating a burglary at the Rifle location of the Garfield County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. The office is located at the corner of East Third Street and East Avenue in Rifle.

According to Rifle Police Chief Daryl Meisner the burglary happened sometime Sunday evening or early Monday morning.

Meisner said that police were contacted Monday morning as employees entered work at about 8 a.m. He said that they had discovered that someone had entered the building and pried open a drawer that held cash and checks.

Meisner said that the perpetrators got away with an undisclosed amount of money in the form of cash and checks.

While Meisner couldn’t speculate on the number of people involved in the break-in, he said that police believe that the person who entered used a key to the facility, and may have been a prior employee.

“We believe that it may be someone who used to have access to the building,” Meisner said.

Meisner said also that a cleaning staff was in the building Sunday night but reported everything in order when they left the building.

Rifle has had a rash of burglaries this summer and Meisner said that the community has been very helpful in coming forward and aiding police in solving some of the crimes. He again is asking for anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Rifle Police at 625-2331.
