Couple plans to build four-star hotel in El Jebel
A midvalley couple hopes to build El Jebel’s first four-star hotel on a property where they operate a private water-ski pond.Ace and Jennifer Lane have applied with Eagle County to build the hotel as part of a massive development project on 200 acres they own in the heart of the El Jebel area. The Lanes own Windriver Trees, a landscaping business that operates on the proposed development site.According to a copy of the development application on file in Eagle County, the highlights of the project would include:n A condominium hotel of 132 units, each with between one and four bedrooms. “This configuration of units creates a total of 256 rentable hotel rooms,” the application said.The developers aspire to build a property like the proposed Westin Hotel in Snowmass Village and the Hard Rock Hotel at Copper Mountain, both of which are affiliated with Intrawest. They think a high-end property can work in El Jebel because nothing like it is available between Aspen and Glenwood Springs.”The hotel will be a three- to four-star-quality condominium hotel with an appropriate design and amenity package to serve the resort market,” the application said.The hotel would include 6,000 square feet of conference and meeting space; a 10,000-square-foot athletic club and spa; and a 4,800-square-foot lobby in a building that could be as tall as 60 feet. An underground parking garage for 144 vehicles and a surface lot with another 125 spaces would serve the facility.The Lanes also applied to build 12 duplex units of up to 2,400 square feet each and 16 smaller “nature cabins” that overlook wetlands by the water-ski pond. Those 28 units would go up for sale, with incentives to rent them through the condo-hotel, according to the application.n A mixture of commercial and residential units with the possibility of a big-box retailer. The Lanes are seeking approval for 91,000 square feet of commercial space. They hope to attract “a specialty grocer that markets a healthy and environmentally conscious oriented product line,” their application said. If they can’t land that type of store, they are not interested in any other type of large retailer, their plan said.Mixed in with the 91,000 square feet of commercial space would be 77 residential units in a “village” pattern. A considerable number of the homes would be “affordable housing.”n The third component of the plan is high-end houses. Eighteen of them would be on lots ranging from one-quarter to three-quarter acres. Six lots would be reserved for the Lane family around its private residence.Eagle County hasn’t yet reviewed the Lanes’ project, which they call Tavaci. Basalt town officials are aware of the Lane proposal and hope to play a big role in that review.The project is in unincorporated Eagle County even though it’s right across from City Market, which is part of Basalt.Eagle County planner Joe Forinash said Basalt officials wanted the Lanes to wait and submit the plan after the completion of Basalt’s town master plan later this year. The Lanes chose to submit their application to Eagle County earlier this spring.
