Crash on Highway 13 lands four motorists in hospital

A crash on a wet and icy Highway 13 outside Rifle sent four people to the hospital Saturday. Christopher Huskey, 24, of Rifle, was driving a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo north on Highway 13 when he lost control of the vehicle, according to a press release from the Colorado State Patrol. The vehicle fishtailed and slid off the left side of the road, striking a delineator post. The vehicle traveled 235 feet and rolled two and three-quarters times, ejecting the front passenger, John McDonnell, 44 of Rifle. McDonnell was not wearing a seat belt and came to rest underneath a tree 35 feet from the vehicle. McDonnell was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction with serious injuries, along with Robert Robbins, 42, of Delta, who was riding in the left rear passenger seat.The right rear passenger, Keith Burbeck, 21, of Rifle, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Grand River Medical Center, as was Huskey. None of the passengers was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash, and the Garfield County Sheriff, Rifle Fire Department and Ambulance, Colorado Department of Transportation and Rifle Amoco assisted at the scene.
