Garfield sheriff on lookout for sex offender

Leonard Hendricks

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a 51-year-old registered sex offender as a person of interest in a recent break in at Mamm Creek, south of Rifle.

A couple came back to their cabin at Mamm Creek two days ago to find someone had broken in. Walt Stowe, the sheriff’s public information officer, said the pair saw someone going out the back door and discovered that a rifle hung on the wall was missing.

The sheriff’s office is unsure whether the rifle was operable or merely decorative, said Stowe.

The sheriff’s office believes Leonard Hendricks was in the area because his van was found abandoned at West Mamm Creek two weeks ago.

He’s wanted on an outstanding nationwide warrant as a “non-compliant registered sex offender.”

The Colorado sex offender registry says that he was convicted of sexual exploitation of a child-video and his last known address was in Silt.

Stowe said Hendricks failed to check in as a sex offender when he moved to the Rifle area. Investigators believe he was recently living out of his van after being evicted from his Rifle residence.

Authorities ask that you call 911 immediately if you see or have seen this man.

If you otherwise have any information in this case, contact the sheriff’s office at 970-945-0453.
