Police: Man burglarizes Basalt bar, swipes bank bag
Basalt police are seeking a man who allegedly broke into a Midland Avenue bar and restaurant Sunday morning and swiped a bank bag while the owner was tending the books in the basement.
Basalt Police Sgt. Aaron Munch said the department is investigating the incident as a burglary, trespassing and theft.
An unknown male entered the Brick Pony at 8:50 a.m. and took the bank bag, which was sitting on the bar, Munch said. It wasn’t disclosed how money was in the bag. Nothing else was taken, Munch said, and the man quickly departed.
The business owner emerged from the basement later in the morning and was preparing to make a bank deposit when he couldn’t find the bank bag. He checked the video of surveillance cameras and discovered the intruder, then called police, Munch said.
Police are looking for a white male approximately 30 years of age. He was wearing a white or cream colored puffy jacket and a dark stocking hat. The man didn’t make an effort to conceal his identity.
The intruder gained access through a back door, then entered the kitchen to get into the bar area. The door was locked at the time but he “finagled a way in,” Munch said.
It is unknown if the man targeted Brick Pony or he spotted the bank bag while looking in the front windows. If he had knowledge of operations and knew the bank bag would be on the bar while the owner was in the basement, it seems like he would also have been aware of the surveillance cameras.
“I don’t want to rule [anything] out right now,” Munch said.
None of the employees of the bar and restaurant said they recognized the man, Munch said. At least one employee posted still images of the man from the surveillance tape on Facebook and asked for help identifying him.
Basalt Police also released an image. If anyone has information about the suspect or the incident, they are asked to call Basalt Police Department at 970-927-4316.
