Critic should use energy to help CARE

Melissa Laeser

Dear Editor,

This letter is in response to the story regarding the lawsuit between Colorado Animal Rescue (CARE) and resident Steve Smith.

Mr. Smith, I am appalled at your comment stating that CARE “will not continue. … It is only a matter of time and expense.”

Where do you expect pets that have been abandoned or who are otherwise homeless to go? CARE is a homeless shelter for unwanted pets in this community, and it performs a necessary duty to the pets who would be running at large or antagonizing livestock and wildlife. Unwanted pets also are at risk for being poisoned, run-over by vehicles, or starving to death.

Yes, Mr. Smith, there are dogs at CARE, and yes, Mr. Smith, dogs bark. CARE has made modifications to its site to ensure that the animals living there have the best life possible while living in cages and that surrounding residents are not disturbed by its presence.

CARE is a nonprofit organization that receives donations from the community and hosts great fund-raisers to allow unwanted pets to have a place to live.

I am outraged that your goal is to have CARE out of business. I am also outraged that your method to put them out of business is to have CARE expend money on lawsuits they have already won. I believe you could expend your energy by promoting and advocating spay/neuter laws and adopt-a-thons (things that help CARE and reduce the number of animals living in cages) instead of trying to put them out of business.
