GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado – The Colorado Rocky Mountain School climbing team traveled to the Grand Junction Climbing Center for the Western Slope Regional high school climbing championships on Saturday.

The CRMS Oysters tackled more than 50 boulder problems on the indoor walls. CRMS was vying with teams from Montrose, Ridgeway/Ouray, and Fruita/Grand Junction for spots at the state championships next Saturday in Colorado Springs.

After three hours of hard climbing, the CRMS boys came out on top.

CRMS senior Paris Yaffe took the top spot, earning his third overall victory of the season. He was followed by Juan-Pablo Alcocer of CRMS in second, Sheldon Squirrel of Montrose in third and Frank Adgate of CRMS in fourth.

Two other CRMS boys earned berths in the state championships, with Mason Cazedessus in eighth place and Ben Dowson in ninth.

On the girls side, CRMS fielded an injury-depleted squad.

Fruita’s Summer Igo continued her dominance by posting another victory.

Freshman Lea Linse was the only finisher for the CRMS Pearls, with a strong fourth place and a spot at state.

Next, the Western Slope athletes will take on the 78 representatives from the Northern Colorado, Denver Metro and Southern Colorado regions next weekend to determine the best high school climbers in the state.
