Curry dominates in District 61 race

The race for State House District 61 was a clear win for Democrat Kathleen Curry of Gunnison. Curry received 60.8 percent of votes in the district, beating the 36.68 percent of Republican Becky Rippy, of New Castle, and the 2.52 percent of Libertarian Dale Reed, of No Name.District 61 includes Pitkin, Hinsdale and Gunnison counties, Eagle County in the Roaring Fork Valley, and eastern Garfield County. Curry, who lives in Gunnison, won 71.19 percent of the votes in Gunnison County, to Rippy’s 26.36 percent. In Garfield County, Curry received 49.64 percent of the votes to Rippy’s 47.81 percent, and Reed’s 2.55 percent.Both Curry and Rippy applauded each other’s efforts during the campaign, and Rippy said she thought Curry would do a great job for District 61. Curry worked for the past five years as manager of the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District.Curry said that after the election she’d work to protect water and to amend the Taxpayers Bill of Rights (TABOR).
